 Terry McPherson’s Club Talk
March 2009

Speakers: There have been many good ideas for meeting topics and guest speakers given to me already. I have tried to start   our fishing season with speakers who will present topics relevant to getting our fishing season started off properly. So, everyone get ready, there are some good speakers coming this year.
I would like to share with you information about 1 or 2 of the speakers coming soon: Captain Gus from lake Norman will share his experience in correctly reading depth sounders and this will be at our March 11th Meeting.   Then the following month meeting on April 8th, Captain Dave Tilley of the Continental Shelf bottom fishing boat out of Morehead City will be our speaker.

Clubs working together: I’ve been sharing a lot with the Dennis Pless and others at the Piedmont Chapter of the North Carolina Waterman Club at Bass Pro Shop, and it looks like we might be having some of their members attending our club meeting and some of ours members attending their meetings.  This will also lead to our clubs helping each other with various functions as we go thru this year. 2009 Military Appreciation Day events and the Continental Shelf bottom fishing trip.

Work shop: Now, a little about our Workshops; anyone needing a little better understanding of how to read and navigate around on our website please attend. Vince O’Connor will show us how to rig ballyhoo for offshore tuna and dolphin & wahoo. This will be during the April 13th workshop Monday night at 7 pm.  Fishing season is coming soon, so please feel free to use this club and it’s workshops to get ready and enjoy some really good fishing this year. This club is for all of us and our families to learn and have fun fishing.

February Meeting Minutes

The meeting was started with fishing stories.  Not many people out fishing due to the weather.  However Doug Caldwell & Terry Moore got together and made the long trip to Islamorada in the Florida Keys.  This sounds like something we would all like to do.

We had 5 visitors at the meeting.   Graig Evans from Belmont, Robert Towles from Shelby, Barry Carter from Kannapolis, Isaac Carter from Landis and Jeff Overcash from Rockwell, NC.  We welcome you and hope you will check us out again.

Terry passed out a sample of a new Calendar for the club which Rocky will post and update.  Please let us know if you have any events, tournaments etc. to post on the calendar.

Don’t forget the CCA Banquet March 26, 2009 in Midtown Charlotte.  Lots of auctions, raffles and good eats too.

MAD is having Winners Choice Raffle.  Prizes will be updated and posted on the MAD web site.  $10.00 tickets can be bought from a MAD volunteer or by sending a check to the address posted on militaryappreciationday.org website.  Donations are tax deductable.  Registration opens March 2nd for the Morehead City event.

New Business was brought up by Doug Caldwell to have a Board of Directors.  This created quite a discussion and it was decided that we would all think about this and have a business meeting at our next regular club meeting in March.  Please write down your thoughts and be prepared to discuss this at our next regular meeting.  (Business Meeting)

Some items for thought;

·        Non Profit Organization

·        Organize Club

·        Set up Committees for Membership, Special Projects, Club Events

·        Direct where money is to be spent for the Club

·        Set up Fund raisers if needed etc.

·        Tax Forms – Lawyer fees –

JC Honeycutt won a rod and reel at our monthly raffle.

Roger Cook was our Guest Speaker from CN Waterman, Piedmont Chapter who spoke on Salt water Fly Fishing. Wow what an interesting and humorous presentation Roger had for us.  Thank you Roger for getting us focused on our love for fishing. Roger shared his experience on using the different rod weights and line weights and had a lot of good tips for us.

      • always use a good disk drag
      • change out leaders loop to loop
      • cost of rods, reels and flies
      • types of leaders
      • stripping baskets
      • buy rods that are guaranteed
      • blind fishing
      • break water fishing
      • trolling while fishing for Spanish
      • sinking lines
      • floating lines
      • IGF rules

Roger also pointed out that no one has ever caught a tarpon on a fly rod in NC but he is trying hard to be the first!!!!.

Again, Congratulations to Rob Ferris for winning the SKA Sportsman of the Year Award.

Next Club Meeting March 11th at 7:00 pm Captions Galley in Matthews

Don’t forget this one will be a Business Meeting.

2009 IT IS TIME TO RENEW RECREATIONAL FISHING LICENSES

MOREHEAD CITY – Before casting a hook and line or jabbing a gig, fishermen should take a moment to pull their
Coastal Recreational Fishing Licenses from their wallets or tackle boxes to check the expiration dates.

The annual recreational licenses expire one year from the date of purchase, so those who bought one in January
2008 may need to renew it before going fishing.

“Our commercial licenses and permits all expire on June 30 of each year, and we want to make sure people don’t get
these dates confused,” said Marine Patrol Col. Rex Lanier.

This is particularly important since a yearlong grace period, in which Marine Patrol handed out warning tickets to first offenders,
is over, Lanier said.

In 2007, Marine Patrol handed out more than 2,800 warning tickets but only 25 actual citations for fishing without a
Coastal Recreational Fishing License.

Now, however, those caught fishing without a license will get a ticket that carries a fine and court costs of $155.

The state sold 470,400 Coastal Recreational Fishing Licenses in 2007, and 25,591 of those were purchased in the first
four weeks of the year. Most of the licenses sold were annual resident licenses.

The license requirement pertains to anyone age 16 or older fishing in coastal waters of North Carolina, except those
who held a Lifetime Sportsman or Lifetime Comprehensive Fishing license issued by
the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission prior to Jan. 1, 2006.

An annual license costs $15 for residents and $30 for non-residents. Ten-day licenses and a variety of lifetime licenses are
available, as well. For more information on the types of licenses available, view the DMF Web site at www.ncdmf.net.

Licenses may be purchased or renewed at Wildlife Resources Commission licensing agents, which include most bait and
tackle shops and all DMF license offices. They may also be purchased online at www.ncwildlife.org, or
by calling 1-888-2HUNTFISH (1-888-248-6834).

Club dues are upon us again. Please be prepared in January to pay your $60.00 a year membership dues for the entire family!
