Long Bay Artificial Reef Association 9th Annual Club Challenge was
held on Saturday September 30th 2006. A record “Challenge” field of
62 boats representing eight clubs put lines in at 7:00 am.

 

With competitors departing from Cape Fear River to Little River Inlet the fishing was great.
Baitfish was plentiful off Oak Island, Holden Beach and Ocean Isle.  It seemed as though
the “bite” was on as soon as the first bait hit the water.  Fish were plentiful almost
everywhere from the Jungle area to the Cape Fear River Channel.

 

King Mackerel Division Individual Honors

When the last fish was weighed the crew of the “Creecher” Captained by Al Fulford crewed
by Mike Fields and Lin Creech representing the Holden Beach Fishing Club captured top
King Mackerel honors with a 39.08 lb. Beauty.

 

The Charlotte Offshore Sport Fishing Club Team of Captain Rudy Stewart crewed by
Sam Hobbs and Jim Queen placed 2nd with a 28.86 lb. King Mackerel.

 

Representing Ocean Isle Fishing Center, Captain Jeremy Harrelson along with brother
Ron Harrelson put a 28.16 lb King Mackerel on the scales to place third.

 

Flounder Division Individual Honors

Top individual honors in the Flounder Division went to Captain Fred Davis along with
Hank Martinez, representing the ”Got-em-on Club from Carolina Beach, Fred’s
top flounder weighed 5.16 lbs.

 

Captain Tim Corn fishing with his brother Bobby Corn representing the
Schneider Stone Team placed 2nd.  Tim placed a 5.02 lbs. Flounder on the scale.

 

Representing the Winston Salem Saltwater Fishing Club, Captain Karen Haas
placed 3rd with a 4.90 lb flounder.  Karen was fishing with Eddie Dunlap and Greg Baker.

 

King Mackerel Club Results

The top five fish from each club was tallied in each division to determine the final standings. 
With a three fish per boat limit, teamwork was essential.

 

Anchored by Captain Al Fulford’s 39.06 lb’er and strong support from
Captain Robert Bryant and Captain Joe Hutchens the Holden Beach Fishing Club took top
honors with a five fish aggregate of 135.48 lbs.

 

Taking 2nd place was the Ocean Isle Fishing Center Team anchored by
Captain Jeremy Harrelson’s 28.16 lbs with strong support from Captain Barrett Mc Mullen
and Captain Lee Frick.  Their five fish aggregate totaled 119.15 lbs.

 

Finishing third was the Charlotte Offshore Sport Fishing Cub led by Captain
Rudy Steward’s 28.86 lbs with support from Captain Andy Fisher, Captain Steve Sherron,
Captain Eric Lindy and Captain Michael Guran the club weight totaled 110.24 lbs.

 

Flounder Club Results 

First Place went to the Charlotte Offshore Sport Fishing Club with a five fish
aggregate of 15.62 lbs. Led by Captain Andy Fisher’s 3.80 lbs. With support from the
father and son teams of Captain Chris Jenkins and dad Gary Jenkins along with
Captain Todd Jenkins and s
on Garrett Jenkins.

 

The 2006 Flounder Division win was the Fifth consecutive division-win for the
Charlotte Offshore Sport Fishing Club.  The club perfected their flounder techniques on the
banks of the Catawba River and Lake Norman.

Finishing second on the efforts Captain Fred Davis and Hank Martinez was the
Carolina Beach Got-em-on Fishing Club.  Fred and Hank posed a three fish
aggregate of 11.60 lbs.

 

The Winston Salem Saltwater Fishing Club finished third with a strong showing from
Captain Karen Haas and her crew of Eddie Dunlap and Greg Baker.  They scored a
total weight of 10.32 lbs.

 

The big winner from the event was the Long Bay Artificial Reef Association.  The amount of
money raised from the event along with personal and club donations exceeded $10,000.00.
